Peoria Heights Fire Department’s future unknown

The mayor of Peoria Heights says the future of their fire department ultimately comes down to funding. Mayor Michael Phelan says with the coming retirement of the village fire chief, the board has begun looking into other options.
For sometime, Chief Greg Walters has told the mayor about his struggles to recruit volunteer firefighters. Phelan says they hope to decide on one of the four following options within 30 days:
A paid staff during the daytime hours, with volunteers at night
Do away with the department entirely and contract with the city of Peoria
Keep it as is, all volunteer
Establish a fire protection district that would oversee fire operations
