Some good news. One less thug on the street.

PEORIA (WEEK) -- Police say one person is dead after a shooting at a residence in Peoria early Sunday morning - officers believe the shooting may have occurred during a home burglary.

Police responded to the 2800 block of West Gilbert Avenue around 1:00 a.m. regarding a report of a person shot.

When they arrived, officers found a victim - an adult male - in the backyard of a residence with apparent gunshot wounds.

Responding officers performed life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Information gathered at the scene determined a resident of the home had arrived and may have interrupted a burglary in process.

Police say the resident confronted the intruder and shots were fired.

Peoria County Coroner was on scene and will identify the victim, as well as a cause of death, after an autopsy is performed.

The occupant of the residence was transported to the Peoria Police Department Criminal Investigations Division for interview purposes.

Police say the incident is still under investigation, and anyone with information should contact Detective Clint Rezac at (309) 494-8364 or CrimeStoppers anonymously at (309) 673-9000.

The good news: it looks like he will survive his wounds.
The bad news: the violence in the South End continues::

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A shooting on S. Oregon St. near W. Wyoming St. sent one man to the hospital Wednesday morning.
Peoria police confirmed one man has been shot in the left arm. He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Yea, stop emboldening criminals by vilifying police and start giving serious sentences to violent offenders for starters. Also, encouraging black youth to get out of hip hop/gangbanger culture and stop ridiculing those that work hard and take their education seriously. It would be nice if the snitches get stitches mentality would be gone as well, but I don't know how to get rid of that.

Obvious points that I am sure have been discussed numerous times. Until somebody figures something out things are not going to change. In my opinion we need much harsher punishment, but I'm not sure that will do much either. At this point, we need to start back at square one. GUN CONTROL!!! Make it much, much harder to get guns. Less guns = Less crimes. Before I get attacked for saying that, I understand that it will take years for that to have a significant effect. But at this point, we have to start somewhere. Nothing else seems to be working.

Did you know that as recently as the 60s, maybe even later, people could get a gun delivered to them from a mail order catalog? How many mass shootings and inner city murders were there back then? This is an inner city culture issue, not a guns issue. How do you plan to make it harder for criminals to get guns? Newer and tougher laws only make it harder for law abiding citizens to arm themselves. They do not deter criminals.
