Re: "A witness told police that Pate was the triggerman and that he was trying to rob Gates. When questioned by police, Pate first denied the shooting but later said he was trying to rob Gates of a handgun and his weapon accidentally went off.

Pate said he fled the scene on foot and then threw his handgun in the nearby woods. Muench said Gates’ “gun” was really a toy that had black tape wrapped around it. It did have a real extended magazine."

Definitely a deadly mistake on the part of the victim. Carrying a toy gun pretending it was real? Surprised he didn't have a real gun on him, since it seems getting illegal guns is.easy, grom a gang member, an older friend or relative, basically stolen from somewhere, or transported down from the cesspool of Black market for guns in Chicago.

Accidentally went off? Let's see how the defense plays that out when case comes to trial in about a year.

That is called victim blaming.
The CHILD was carrying a TOY.
The murderer cowardly shot this CHILD in the back.
The very young Black CHILD is now dead, because some thug decided his life didn’t matter.

Both of you are right though. And as unpopular as it may be, the victim (and his parents) does share a certain amount of the responsibility. What he was doing was incredibly stupid, but regularly celebrated by the rap culture that @Tazewell and I often cite as one of the root causes of problems in minority neighborhoods. I am not apologizing or making excuses for the alleged shooter when I say this.

People caught in the cycle of poverty need to be given a hand UP, and that is done by gradually ending the hand OUT.

I have to agree that gangsta rap that criticizes women, police, and other authority figures unfortunately does influence a lot of minority youth. Wasn't always that way. Rap used to send positive messages, like from Ludacris, MC Hammer, Will Smith, Whodini, for youth to aspire to be more than gang bangers. But $$$ is what's driven positive rap to be more obscure than gangsta rap.

If radio stations and streaming services stopped running gangsta rap, it might wake up the record companies about the damage gangsta rap can do to a community.

This is a huge part of the reason we avoid Peoria whenever possible now. I don't remember these things happening so regularly until recently.

Peoria Police say they have uncovered another case of very young offenders involved in car thefts.

Police say eight juveniles, four boys and four girls, ages 14 to 17, were riding in two stolen vehicles shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.

According to a news release, the cars were speeding with the teenagers hanging out of the cars’ windows along Sheridan Road and War Memorial Drive.

Later, police said they saw one of the stolen cars crash into another vehicle at War Memorial Drive and Knoxville Avenue, where there were only minor injuries.

The young suspects got into the second stolen car, abandoned that vehicle near Flora and Archer, and ran away.

Officers said they eventually caught the eight juveniles after a foot chase.

Police said seven of the suspects were arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. A 17-year-old boy was cited for criminal trespassing to a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen gun.

All but one of the teens was taken to the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center. A 16-year-old girl was released to the custody of her mother.

A number of these youths arrested on Wednesday have significant criminal histories, said police.

This latest incident seems to support Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins’ contention that car thefts are often committed by a large group of juveniles, some as young as 12-years old. Watkins stated his view during a May 25 interview with 25News.

We need to get more creative with ways to punish these youthful offenders in a manner that more strongly discourages both their recidivism as well as serves as a general deterrent to others.

One person was arrested, and another was injured, following an early morning stabbing in the area of an apartment complex that’s been in the news before.

Police were called to West Oakcrest Drive, in the area of Lexington Hills Apartments, just before 1:00 a.m. Friday.

Two people had reportedly been in a fight, with one being sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jamar King, 46, was arrested on a charge of Aggravated Battery, and taken to the Peoria County Jail, but has already been released.
The real WMBD showed the mugshot. The other WMBD did not. I wonder why.

Why don't you call them and ask? (309) 688-3131, ask for newsroom. Or email them WMBDnews@nexstar.tv. Phone calls are answered, (I do hear the phones ring) and emails are replied to. (I've seen viewer emails)

I haven't heard why mugshots are not shown anymore, but I'm not at liberty to divulge the reason if I did.

I've heard you're not involved in the stories. I'm not surprised you don't know why the mugshot wasn't included.
